Squash Goes Gold!
Yesterday morning, the squash community learned of an exciting announcement that we have been eagerly awaiting. The World Squash Federation (WSF) and Professional Squash Association (PSA) have joined forces and officially launched the “Squash Goes Gold” Campaign, which is centered around one major objective— to help Squash earn it’s well- deserved spot in the 2024 Olympic Games that will be held in Paris.
I vividly remember our strong push for inclusion in the 2020 Games and falling just short in the final round of the selection process. After coming so close, it was a heartbreaking loss for the entire community. However, we learned from our mistakes and have made major strides in the sport’s development since then. From prize parity for men and women at major events to greatly enhancing the experience of spectators both in-person and on live-stream, the sport is in a stronger position than ever before.
Voted the “world’s healthiest sport” by Forbes Magazine in 2012, it is no secret that the physical demands of squash at the professional are extraordinary. But in addition to requiring the highest level of fitness from its athletes, the demand for tactics and mental strength is what makes the sport so challenging and worthy of a spot on the Olympic stage. It also doesn’t hurt that a court can be built just about anywhere.
“Squash is played in some of the most spectacular locations in the world – in front of the Pyramids of Giza, on the harbour-front in Hong Kong, inside Grand Central Terminal in New York – and our ability to showcase the beauty, youth and innovative drive of Paris by setting up an all-glass court anywhere in the city is something few sports can do,” said WSF President Jacques Fontaine.
Given that the Olympics is the greatest athletic competition in the world, as an elite athlete, it has naturally always been a life-long dream to compete on the world’s most prestigious stage. I hope I’ll get the chance to see this dream through and am extremely optimistic that the Squash Goes Gold campaign will bring the squash community together and give us the best possible chance at securing a well-deserved spot in the 2024 games.
